![]() I saw some love for them online, especially on TDPRI, but I didn't realize they were being discontinued. I'll preface this by saying that I'm a Pathfinder 15 owner (non-reverb version). And I do think that a larger, heavier combo would mitigate the grab & go convenience of the 15R. But I do wonder at what point the dynamics of the amp to cabinet to speaker interactions might affect the tone of the Pathfinder. From a size and wattage output perspective, I'd definitely be interested in a Pathfinder 30R w/ a 10". Quite a different sound when compared to the Vox Pathfinder, but for the moment that's not my point. As for the footprint, it's not much bigger than my PF15Rs, and doesn't weight that much more. I have an old Peavey teal stripe Envoy 110. ![]() I'm not saying I know the answer to that question, nor am I saying that the answer would be the same for everyone. I wouldn't be against the idea, just not overly optimistic.Īnd would a "super improved Pathfinder" still have the qualities we love in the PF 15R? How much larger a cabinet, and how much more weight to the combo would take it out of the convenient grab & go category? Here again, I'm not optimistic about Vox re-releasing the PF15R, or a "super improved Pathfinder," for that matter. I'm looking for what current production amp to recommend now. When the PF15R was still in production, I'd recommend it as the ideal practice/grab & go amp anytime someone asked for my opinion (and maybe sometimes even when they didn't ). I have 3 Pathfinder 15Rs, so I'm not looking for another 15R type amp personally. But I'm not a fan of all the extras on the Mustang (just an old fool from the old school, I guess), so the search continues.Īnd just to clarify, this search I'm talking about is for what to recommend. But honestly, later when comparing the 25R to the Mustangs, I preferred the Mustangs for tone. Of the three I test drove that day, I preferred the 25R. Oh, years ago I A/B'ed the 25R against an Orange Crush 30R and another small amp that so little impressed me I don't remember it at all now. You couldn't prove that by me, but I never considered that amp to be a contender. Someone has said they think the Frontman 25R has been discontinued as well. But to me it sounded like a toy, and I seem to remember other TDPRI members describing it the same way. Granted, I've only played through one once, in a local resale store, of all places. The Pathfinder 10 is still listed by Vox as currently in production, but IMHO it comes nowhere near the 15R. ![]() If later on Vox comes out with something comparable, or better still re-releases the PF15R, I'll be a happy camper. What I was thinking of in this thread is knowing what current production model amp to recommend in place of a PF15R. I'd be delighted if the next "Pathfinder 15R" came from Vox.īut given the facts of where things stand now, I'm not that optimistic. I'm not trying to personally boycott Vox, less still trying to rally a boycott against Vox. Hopefully this will produce some good candidates for an alternative to the now discontinued Vox Pathfinder 15R. ![]() I would be glad to have someone point me in the direction of an amp ticks all these boxes (to borrow an English expression).Īnd thus, this thread. I don't know of anything out there that meets all these criteria. And that is precisely why we so lament its passing. But then that is precisely what we had with the PF15R, a little amp that set the bar quite high. When you list out the features like that, it sounds like a wish list that's setting the bar rather high. The amp that replaces the Pathfinder 15R should be versatile, have warmth and chime, and tones that make a tube snob turn the amp around and check for tubes.Īnd by the way, it should do all this sporting classic good looks.Īnd it should do all this for just $120, or thereabouts. This replacement amp should have simple controls, but still come with Tremolo and Reverb. I'm thinking it should have an 8" or 10" speaker, but then again, some have wanted this amp to have a 12", so. Grab & go, so it has to have a fairly small footprint, and be lightweight. ![]() So, what amp currently in production (if any) comes close to the Pathfinder 15R? Here are the parameters as I see it. Hopefully, this will generate more response. I contemplated posting a reply in the "discontinued" thread, but decided instead to create a new thread to address this question. ![]()
